Today, MaĆ«l taught from Matthew 17:14-21. When Peter, James, and John came down from the mountain (where the three apostles saw Jesus’ glory), they came upon a troubling scene. A man had brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus’ disciples to be healed. The disciples were not able to cast out the demon because of a lack of faith.

This passage is similar to the account in Exodus of Moses and Joshua going up Mt. Sinai to receive the tablets of the law from God. when they came down the mountain, they found the Israelites worshiping the golden calf.

We know that the apostles had cast out demons before (Matthew 10:5-8), but they were not able to cast the demon out of the boy. Again, Jesus pointed to their lack of faith. Once again, Jesus points to the importance of faith – not just saving faith, but faith to live every day. Even if we’ve had past successes, we must continually exhort ourselves and others toward a life of trusting God with everything.
