Last Sunday, MaĆ«l taught from Matthew 17:22-27. Once again, Jesus tells his followers that he is going to die and be raised from the dead. The disciples were sorrowful, indicating that they did not understand the implications of Jesus’ resurrection.

Next, through implication, Jesus includes Peter as a child of God. Children of the king do not pay taxes to the king. In the same way, children of God do not pay money the kingdom of God. However, we apply this passage today, we should recognize that we are children of God.

As children of God, we have been set free from the “duties” of others. However, as Scripture points out, we are now free to love and serve one another, not free to care for ourselves.
