Last Sunday, MaĆ«l taught from Matthew 18:1-9. In this passage, Jesus uses a “little child” as an object lesson to answer the disciples’ question, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
Jesus responds that his followers should humble themselves like “a little child”. Children do not normally have humble hearts; instead, they are often proud and self-centered. But, children do have a humble (i.e., lowly) position. They do not have the authority to choose what they are going to do. (Think about parents giving their children chores to do.)
Thus, Jesus is telling us to put ourselves in the position of a child – giving up our own rights so that we can serve others. We do not choose who to serve, we serve everyone that God brings into our lives. The greatest in the kingdom are those that humble themselves and serve.
Next, Jesus warns against causing brothers and sisters in Christ to sin. We should never be a stumbling block to other “little children”.
